How to Prepare for the East Bay’s New Area Code: Hello 341!

 

Limber up those dialing fingers because a new area code is coming to the 510.

This month, the Public Utilities Commission will add a 341 area code overlay to the East Bay region.

You won’t have to change your existing 510 phone number. But people who request a new phone number may be assigned a 341 area code.

The biggest change for East Bay dialers: Telephone lines with 510/341 area codes must dial 1 + the area code and phone number on all calls within their region.

The price of a local call will remain the same.

Emergency 911 calls won’t be affected, nor will other three-digit numbers such as the City of Oakland’s 311, Caltrans’ 511, and 411 directory assistance.

Impacted areas will include the Alameda County cities of Alameda, Albany, Berkeley, Emeryville, Fremont, Hayward, Newark, Oakland, Piedmont, San Leandro, and Union City; and the Contra Costa County cities of El Cerrito, Hercules, Pinole, Richmond, and San Pablo.

• Even though your existing 510 number doesn't change, you must dial 1 + the area code to call a 510 number.
• Reprogram your personal and business automatic dialing systems to include 1 + area code, including life safety systems and medical monitoring devices, internet dial-up, fax machines, gates, alarm and security systems, speed dialers, voicemail, and call forwarding.
• Make sure your personal and business cards, stationary, checks, websites, etc. include the area code.

East Bay area code fun facts

 

 

•  510 isn’t just a number. It’s an identity. The 510 is printed loud and proud on tees, tanks, and hats. It's NBA Warriors pride (see the shirt pictured above). And 510 is an integral part of business and organization names, like the 510 Skate Shop and the Chapter 510 youth writing center in Oakland.
• 341 is California's 35th area code.
• California has more area codes than any other state in the U.S.
• The 510 area code was created in 1991 when it was split off from 415. Then the 510 area code was split in 1998 when the 925 area code was created.
• The first customer-dialed direct call using area codes was made on November 10, 1951, from Englewood, New Jersey, to Alameda, California.
• After June 22, if you forget to dial 1+ the area code, your call will not go through and you'll hear a recorded "wrong number" message.
