Tilden Park & Park Hills Neighborhood
If you don’t already live in Berkeley, you may not have had the pleasure of visiting Park Hills or Tilden Regional Park.
Tilden Park is known as the jewel of the East Bay regional parks. Its recreational activities have become a happy tradition among young and old alike. With more than 2000 acres of park, Tilden Park hosts a wide variety of activities from Lake Anza for swimming and picnicking, a carousel, the Little Farm (petting farm) to the Steam Train ride, stables, & many, many hiking, biking, and off leash trails. Wildlife abounds: deer, foxes, turkeys,& raptors are not uncommon to see. Wildcat Canyon corridor is a major touring bike route through the hills & connects over to Orinda and Briones areas for long distance bicycling. At 1032 Park Hills, Tilden Park is right outside your door. Residents frequently walk or bike over for a swim or hike or a carousel ride without ever having to get into a car.
Park Hills is known as a community within a community. It was developed in the 1940’s by the sons of Frank Olmstead, the world renowned park designer (of NY Central Park fame). The Olmsted Brothers designed the neighborhood to integrate as seamlessly as possible into the natural environment and blend with Tilden Park. The original homeowners were largely affiliated with UC Berkeley, many being faculty. Some original owners still reside there. As they are aging out, younger professionals are moving in, and the community continues to be an internationally diverse mix of academics, technologists, scientists, artists, and creative thinkers of the day. The location tends to attract owners who want to be close to the natural environment. The area is central to not only Berkeley, but is the easy access non-freeway route to Orinda and Cal Shakes.
There are three common areas in the development – a children’s play park across the street on The Crescent, a meadow down near the entry, and the entry gates, that are maintained by the association through the HOA dues.
The Park Hills association has an annual party for its residents. There are regular Friday night gatherings of the dog owners at Crescent Park plus informal gatherings for dog socializing dates for the younger dogs on Tuesday mornings. Park Hills has an active emergency preparedness group and phone/email tree, including some car pooling possibilities.
