Location Details
The South Prescott neighborhood of West Oakland has one of the most interesting histories of any area of Oakland. Originally part of Southern Pacific Railroad real estate holdings, at the turn of the 20th century it became the site of several blocks of small Victorian homes rented to the Railroad’s African American Pullman porters and their families. The Railroad used the area along 3rd Street as a dumping ground for old railroad parts, deteriorating the neighborhood until the 1960s when the neighbors of the community started a campaign with the City of Oakland and the executives of Southern Pacific to clean up the area, add street lights, and also mobilized neighbors to pressure the Railroad into selling their homes to them. For the next 30 years, the neighborhood slowly transformed. With construction of new artists’ live-work lofts, the West Oakland BART station and revival of the Oakland shipyards, South Prescott is now a thriving, eclectic community of artists, long-time residents and young professionals from San Francisco. Close to Jack London Square as well as being one of the most desirable commute locations with super easy access to Highways 880, 580, 24 and the Bay Bridge. South Prescott is also home to a lovely dog park and is close to several new cafes and small restaurants.
